The Importance of Massage When Training and Recovering
Whaever race you are participating in massage should form part of your training routine.
Many people think that massage is just about "rubbing the body" but in fact a good massage will make you feel like you have been worked on-rather than just "tickled"!!
Massage has a beneficial effect on every part of your body and can be used pre-event, post-event and indeed support any physical training programme you undertake.
When you exercise hard you build up waste products in your muscles such as lactic and carbonic acid. Your muscles are also torn and then repaired during recovery time. This natural process makes your muscles sore and tender and leads to aches and pains.
Massage helps to speed recovery and allow you to keep training by:
- stimulating the lymph flow to remove waste products that have built up in your muscles
- stimulating blood flow bringing nutrients to aid muscle repair and
- breaking down scar tissue and adhesions.
All of this will help you return to training faster with your muscles in better shape.
Massage can also help to heal and avoid injuries using the same mechanisms which aid tissue repair and regeneration, reduce inflammation and help to fight infection.
Exercising hard is the way to become stronger and fitter. However doing this can overwork and stress your muscles and joints making them tight and stiff. Having a massage will improve your range of motion and increase your muscle flexibility reducing any muscle tension by making your muscles more supple and resilient. A massage can loosen and stretch tight muscles, improve posture and gait and thus help you to avoid problems such as backache and piriformis syndrome.
A regular massage is a great way to supplement your training helping you to compete harder and recover. It is also a great way to relax generally and improve your overall sense of wellbeing.
